Aromatherapy is the use of organic compounds to improve your mood, mental state, or health. Those organic compounds are called essential oils. They’re made from various plant parts, such as roots, seeds, leaves, and blossoms.

How does aromatherapy help with depression and anxiety?
There is no clear understanding of how aromatherapy works. It is suggested that chemicals in essential oils may trigger smell receptors in your nose, which deliver messages to the area of your brain that controls your mood.
While some research shows that it might have benefits, more research is required to know if aromatherapy can help treat depression.
One study suggests that essential oils may also help reduce the symptoms of anxiety disorders, which often occur alongside depression. However, this study was conducted on animals. The psychology and brain structure of non-human animals are far less complex than in humans, and animal studies do not normally produce significant results.
It is possible that while aromatherapy may not be able to treat depression and anxiety, it could help improve or reduce symptoms. It should not be solely relied on, but can be used alongside other prescribed therapies instead.
How can aromatherapy be used?
You can enjoy the scent of essential oils by:
Diffusion
Drop a few drops of essential oil into an air diffuser filled with water, and the mist will spread the scent throughout a room if a bigger diffuser is used, or the area around a smaller diffuser.
There is also reed diffuser and clay diffuser for a milder scent. For clay diffuser, drop a few drops of essential oil directly onto it, and hang it in your closet to lightly scent your clothes.
Spray
You can mix essential oil and water in a spray bottle and scent your pillows and clothing.
Massage
It is important to use a trusted pure essential oil, and not to apply essential oils directly to the skin. Instead, ensure that the essential oil is mixed with a carrier oil, such as olive, almond, avocado, or coconut oil, and apply a small amount to a small patch on the skin to test for allergic reaction and skin irritation.
Baths
Scented bath oils, bath and shower bombs, and bath salts can help you relax and unwind after a long day.
