What are weighted blankets?
Weighted blankets are therapeutic blankets where pressure from the extra weight mimics a therapeutic technique called deep pressure stimulation or pressure therapy. This pressure relaxes the nervous system and models the experience of being held or hugged.
What are the benefits of weighted blankets?
Pressure therapy from the weight may reduce symptoms of anxiety, relieve the perception of pain,
improve sleep quality, reduce insomnia and
relieve symptoms of depression. Studies with these results are conducted for a minimum of 4 weeks, and so you should try the weighted blanket for at least the same amount of time.
How to choose the correct weight?
The general guideline is that a weighted blanket should be 5% to 10% of your body weight. You may not be used to having a heavier blanket on your body at first, and may need time to adjust. If in doubt, you should opt for the lower weight to start with.
